Brighouse, the second largest town in Calderdale, has always been an important Pennines crossroads, situated as it is between the larger centres of Leeds, Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield.
The Smith Art Gallery, close to the town centre, has an interesting collection of Victorian paintings, including a few minor masterpieces, such as Atkinson Grimshaw's Mossy Glen and Marcus Stone's Silent Pleading. There is also a changing program of exhibitions of works by local artists.
Brighouse is the home of the famous Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band, which was founded in 1881 and is one of the most famous brass bands in the country.
