Ilkley

Ilkley is a lovely little town that stands on the River Wharfe and at the foot of Ilkley Moor.

Many of the buildings in the town are Victorian, dating from the time when Ilkley was a thriving spa town. In 2004 Ilkley was a winner in the Britain in Bloom contest.

Ilkley still retains much of its Victorian and Edwardian charm. It has many small independent shops, including Lishman's of Ilkley, an award-winning butcher's shop whose owner, David Lishman, was named as one of Rick Stein's superheroes. Among the places to eat and drink are the famous Bettys Café Tea Rooms and the Michelin-starred Box Tree Restaurant where Marco Pierre White trained as a chef.

The Manor House, one of Ilkley's oldest buildings, has been converted into an attractive museum and art gallery.

Ilkley, or rather Ilkley Moor, has the distinction of being the setting for the Yorkshire anthem, On Ilkla Moor 'Baht 'At.
