Knottingley is an industrial town on the River Aire near Pontefract. It is renowned as a glass manufacturing town.
Until 1699 Knottingley was an important inland river port but, in that year, the Aire was made navigable as far as Leeds. Nonetheless, Knottingley remained a centre for boat building into the twentieth century.
The town has one of the few remaining working coal mines in the United Kingdom.OS grid reference SE 495 235
