Knottingley

Knottingley is an industrial town on the River Aire near Pontefract. It is renowned as a glass manufacturing town.

Until 1699 Knottingley was an important inland river port but, in that year, the Aire was made navigable as far as Leeds. Nonetheless, Knottingley remained a centre for boat building into the twentieth century.

The town has one of the few remaining working coal mines in the United Kingdom.

Perhaps the most remarkable person to be born in Knottingley was Ben Thompson, a notorious Wild West gunfighter (and US city marshal).
