The 13th century St Mary's Church was rebuilt by Sir George Gilbert Scott.

The Mirfield Theological College, the College of the Resurrection was where Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, lectured from 1976 for two years.

Archbishop Trevor Huddleston spent his last days in Mirfield at the Community of the Resurrection.

Charlotte Bronte was a teacher at Roe Head school in Mirfield from 1835 to 1838, having previously been a pupil there.
