Sowerby Bridge

Sowerby Bridge is a small town in the Upper Calder Valley in the heart of the Pennines, about three miles south-west of Halifax.

Sowerby Bridge is at the junction of the Rochdale Canal and the Calder and Hebble Navigation and the whole 18th century canal basin and buildings are listed. The canal, once closed and partly filled in, has now been re-opened as a leisure waterway.

Rushbearing - the traditional ceremony of taking rushes to churches for covering the floors throughout winter - still takes place in Sowerby over the first weekend of September.
